The 2011 matric exam results have left a number of pupils smiling from ear to ear, but despite extra efforts by their teachers, did not pass. Paddy Attwell, director of communications for the Western CAPE Education Department (WCED), said nine of the 27 high schools in the greater Athlone area achieved pass rates of more than 90%, while generally retaining pupil's numbers.
He added unfortunately, there were schools whose pass rates dropped when compared to 2010. Of the three high schools, Modderdam High's matric pass rate when up to 61% from the previous year's 47%.
