South Africa: Shootings Paralyzed Locals

The on-going gangsterism and pointless violence in Bonteheuwel is slowly suffocating locals. It has been going for around 18 months and no answer seems in sight despite repeated efforts by community leaders. When confronted about the reasons for this reckless shootings and violence, gangsters are completely numb with no plausible explanation.

A resident who wants to remain anonymous in one of the 'back streets hotspots', "dis die jong mense wat so skiet, hulle wille werk nie en wil net rob en steel, ons moet saam staan, die government moet sien dat hulle skoolgaan, van anners maak hulle net k&k,"she said. Many community leaders when approached for comment either refused or believe it's better to remain anonymous for fear of reprisal.

One thing they all echoed, though, was that people must get involved with the CPF or neighbourhood watch or any security body present in the area, because failing, SAPS and or national government, will severely deal with 'self imposed law agents' as no vigilantism will be tolerated. According to the police, the situation has improved in the area. What one finds now however, is that the shootings are far more isolated and sporadic, than previously, not that it's any comfort to those affected. Hundreds of residents are demanding more action and less talk from those in authority as they fear this area is slowly going to the dogs.
