Kenya: Put Meditation in Syllabus, Says Don

THE Ministry of Education was yesterday asked to embrace transcendental meditation in its academic curriculum to help manage stress and depression.

The head of Maharishi Transcendental Meditation Prof Bevam Morris who is also the president of Maharishi University institute of Management in Iowa, US, said the upsurge of students committing suicide for failing in national examinations and rising cases of indiscipline in schools are due to stress.

Morris said conscious based education is the simplest remedy to curb the vice as it improves one's self esteem resulting in improved students performance by up to 60 per cent both in class work and personal responsibility. He was addressing an open forum for school heads andteachers and attended by Nandi East DC Irine Ondeng and education officials. Morris, who is on a tour of 14 African countries to promote conscious based education, said the UK and Brazil governments are adopting the system to deal with the rising cases stress and depression. "Transcendental meditation teaching has been proved by scientific research that it improves ones memory, Energy, relationships, reasoning, ability and above all self esteem...as a result cases of indiscipline and law breaking drastically go down". The don said.

Meditation should also be extended to corrective facilities (Prisons) to help convicts reassess their abilities out of crime saying such had worked in a number of African countries among them Senegal and Mozambique where crime rate had fallen drastically. "Those who are put into meditation lessons while in prison, never repeat what drive them to prisons but they change and become leading examples in the society." The Don said.

While calling on the Kenyan government to adopt new methods to deal with institutions of learning stability, Prof. Morris said no students of Transcendental meditation has ever been found to engage in social vices as they live life of purity and self respect. "Schools which adopt TM, record extremely low cases of indiscipline and improved academic results. It's upon you to decide where you want to move," he said. Morris said plans are underway to have a Maharishi school in Nandi Hills so far a number of primary schools have introduced meditation in school which have so far shown drastic increase in academic performance and self respect.
