South Africa: President Zuma Congratulates Malawi's New President

Pretoria — President Jacob Zuma has congratulated Malawi's Vice-President Joyce Banda for assuming the Presidency following the passing on of President Bingu wa Mutharika.

Banda was sworn into office on Saturday following the death last week of President Mutharika. She had been vice-president since 2009.

In a statement, Zuma said: "We commend the government and people of Malawi for upholding their country's constitution and ensuring a peaceful and orderly transition."

He reiterated his call for all Malawians to continue to remain calm and maintain the peace during this time of bereavement.

President Banda, who will be Southern Africa's first female Head of State, has declared an official 10 days of mourning for the late President.
