Kenya: Kitale Families Protest Against Eviction Order

13 April 2012

More than 500 residents of Laini Moja area in Kipsongok location on the outskirts of Kitale yesterday stormed the area DC's office to protest against an order to evict them from land earmarked for a road. They said the government should resettle them elsewhere before evicting them from the land on which they have been living on land since 1958.

The residents families led by Lucy Chepkemboi, Henry Muhindi and Alfred Buserema said the eviction order, which expires on April 19, was issued in the absence of their representatives. "We know that we negotiated with the government which allowed us to stay on the farm as it seeks the place to resettle us," said Chepkemboi. They claimed that the land has been allocated to Matisi Cooperative society, which has been issued with the title deed.
