Rached Ghannouchi, the head of Ennahdha - the center-right Islamist party and dominant power in the tripartite coalition government - has been chosen for Time Magazine's list of the 100 Most Influential People in the World for 2012. The final list, selected by online editors, was published on April 18.
Though he refrained from running as a candidate in Tunisia's first democratic elections, held in October 2011, he has remained a key figure in post-uprising Tunisian politics. Perhaps the most recognized figure in Tunisian politics internationally, support for Ghannouchi domestically is not unequivocal. According to a recent poll, Ghannouchi's approval rating currently stands at 61%, falling 17 points behind Tunisia's current president Moncef Marzouki.
This recognition is Ghannouchi's second by an American magazine, following his selection for Foreign Policy's list of the Top 100 Global Thinkers of 2011 list.
