Kenya: Thika Police Accused of Harassment

A human right activist has accused police in Thika of harassing innocent residents. Faiz Saleh said police have abandoned their role of dealing with criminals and are instead arresting innocent residents.

He asked the Commissioner of Police Mathew Iteere to protect innocent residents and visitors to the town from his officers' harassment.

If the trend continues, he said business will be affected negatively. He said the restaurants and guest houses will be badly affected because they depend on people who arrive at the town at night.

Saleh asked the police to arrest muggers especially on Cross Road and Mama Ngina roundabout. "Police should be targeting criminals and not law abiding citizens and commercial sex workers who do not pose any danger to visitors and the businessmen," he said.

He castigated the Thika Municipal Council for not repairing roads in the town saying even drainage systems are clogged leaving floods to cause havoc in the streets and estates.

"We pay taxes yet the council is just in a honey moon whereas we are languishing in floods and streets children menace," he equipped.
