As part of the celebrations to mark the 40th birthday of the United Nations Environmental Programme, three new postage stamps were unveiled by the Postal Corporation of Kenya on Friday. The three stamps feature images of cities that are significant in the history of the environmental organisation. The cities are Nairobi, the home of Unep, Stockholm to commemorate the 1972 UN human environment conference held there and Rio di Janeiro iconic image of Christ the Redeemer, to mark the Rio Earth Summit next month.
The unveiling done at the General Post Office, was presided over by Unep's deputy executive director Amina Mohamed and Postmaster General Hussein Ali. "The volume of snail mail has declined over the years due to the advent of technology which is a global phenomenon. Despite this challenges, mail still accounts for over 60% of over revenue, with an annual turn over exceeding Sh 2.4 billion," said Ali.
Unep's 40 year journey has seen them accomplish a lot of milestones and what better way to capture them than on a stamp.
