ECOWAS Leaders to Meet in Abidjan On Guinea Bissau, Mali Crises

Abidjan — ECOWAS Heads of State and Government are to meet in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire on Thursday, 26th April 2012, on the political crises in Guinea Bissau and Mali.

Guinea Bissau has been embroiled in crisis in the wake of the 12th April 2012 military coup that followed the 18th March 2012 inconclusive presidential election in the country to replace President Bacai Sanha who died in January 2012.

The crisis has stalled the presidential run-off poll earlier scheduled for 29th April 2012. Mali for its part is in transition after ECOWAS and the rest of the international community forced a military junta that seized power on 22nd March 2012 to hand over to civilian authorities.

The country is still facing separatist rebellion in the north. The Abidjan extra-ordinary summit is part of relentless efforts by regional leaders to restore normalcy and constitutional rule to both countries. On 27th March 2012, ECOWAS leaders met in Abidjan and this was followed on 29th March 2012 by a mini-summit, all devoted to regional political and security situations.

ccording to the agenda of the latest Abidjan summit, the meeting will be addressed by the Chairman of the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government, President Alassane Ouattara of Cote d'Ivoire, the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Ambassador Kadré Désiré Ouédraogo, Chairperson of the African Union, and the Representative of the UN Secretary General in West Africa.
