Kenya: Electricity Interruption Worsens As Rains Go On

KENYANS are likely to endure more power interruptions as the sole distributor Kenya Power continue to blame ongoing heavy rains and cable vandalism. Over the last weeks, there have been major outages in many parts of the country some lasting for days. By Monday evening, Kenya Power said electricity supply had been restored to most parts of Nairobi after power outages that persisted in the city most of the weekend.

But some sections bordering OuterRing in Eastlands, parts of Nairobi West and Ngong Road were still off supply with the company saying it was battling to reconnect them. As consumers decry the power interruptions, Kenya Power Managing Director and CEO, Joseph Njoroge, last weekend disputed that the firm has been operating like a monopoly. During a live TV interview on Friday night on NTV, Njoroge said Kenyans had other options in the market like using paraffin and candles.
