Ghetto president Bobi Wine and self-proclaimed Big Size, Bebe Cool have feuded for so long that something good had better come out of their fight at long last.
That 'something good' is in form of what promises to be the biggest show by local artistes on Uganda's social scene, this Friday at Kyadondo rugby grounds. Many have questioned the beefing; isn't it all just a publicity stunt? Well, these guys really do hate each other's guts and Friday's show promises to be a real battle.
In a space of three weeks both camps have generated four songs, just dissing each other. The latest is Majambebe by Bobi's brother Mickie Wine and Little M. In the song the boys sing of a Hummer that is really a lodge, and attack Bebe for wearing women's jeans, failing to complete his house, all the while punctuating the song with words such as Cease & Sekkle and Minzani - both popular Bebe hits.
The song followed Bebe Cool's Film Star: Ndiisa Buti that did not go down well with Bobi Wine who in response released a more sophisticated single titled By Far. Bobi was immediately answered by two members of Bebe's Gagamel crew (Shortkut and Denzo), who released Big Mouth By Far where they haunt Bobi Wine with allegations that he is a rapist among other things.
Whether the beef is improving the industry artistically is now the question to many as it has become too personal. When Bebe released Film Star: Ndiisa Buti, his crime was singing that "omubanda mu film y'afa" [in a movie the gangster always dies] and with Bobi calling himself Omubanda wa Kabaka, he took it as a direct attack on him and gave Bebe a 24-hour ultimatum to withdraw his song or face the mother of all abusive lyrics.
And after the ultimatum, he released his By Far where he brags about being a millionaire who loves his kingdom and works hard. Sadly, lately Ugandan music thrives on beef such as Chameleone's Nekolera Maali and Bebe's Funtula, not to mention the Goodlyfe crew's Mowzey Radio and Weasel whose hatred for Chameleone and Bebe has made them stars lyrically.
When Catherine Kusasira released Enkola ya Taxi rubbishing polygamy, her 'polygamous' boyfriend Fred Sseruga replied with Enkola ya Boda in praise of the practice. Eighton and Rainman's big hit Kiwoko was a response to the Goodlyfe's attack on their former boss Bebe, and when they fell out with Gagamel, they turned their guns on Bebe by again going to studio.
"People came to know me because of my music and I hate to abuse anyone, but I am prone to insults and people think by attacking me they make a milestone. My resolution every New Year is to respect others. As for the house, it's not my priority; my only priority is entertaining people and seeing my family living a happier life. A house can be completed within a day; so, it shouldn't be an issue," Bebe said.
This Friday, Bebe and Bobi meet at a musical frontline. Whether this will put to rest their fights is another matter.
