Egypt: Shafiq Praises Army, Slams Candidates Backing Abbasiya Sit-in

Presidential candidate and former Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq slammed candidates who supported the Abbasiya sit-in in front of the Defence Ministry.

"Let all abusers stop. We condemn the unfaithful who believe they can get the votes of Egyptians by supporting violence," the Middle East News Agency (MENA) quoted Shafiq as saying.

Shafiq praised Egypt's army and mourned conscript Samir Anwar Ismail who died in Abbasiya clashes on Friday.

"This is not the time to mess around. It is not the time for political bids but the time for clear, honest stances. If we want to restore security and stability to Egypt, we should condemn all those who support violence, instigate it or participate in it," Shafiq stated.
