Uganda: Goodlyfe Warns 'Errant' Journalists

interview

Goodlyfe's Mowzey Radio and Weasel - are set to launch their fifth album, Tonjagala, this Friday at Hotel Africana.

Polly Kamukama caught up with them at their Makindye home:

How prepared are you for the album launch?

All is set though our schedules are very tight. The funding, venues and other logistics are already taken care of. We are only remaining with a few rehearsals.

How unique will the launch be?

First, the subsequent show will, for the first time, be held in Jinja rather than the usual Mukono. We felt it best to honour our Busoga fans because the cover track, Lwaki Tonjagala, has Lusoga verses.

We will also have guest performances from top artistes, we will sing some of the other songs that the audience has not listened to; we have duets with Amani and Nameless (Kenya). We will also give the audience a sneak-peek into next year's album.

Is it true that you have sold the show at Shs 50 million, down from Talk and Talk's Shs 80 million?

Media is always quick to speculate. This is simple money to facilitate our dressing and eating prior to the show; we have to look good. All we can say is that the show has been taken good care of.

Some people think your music has tremendously declined.

That is very unfair and impatient of the fans. While we launch an eight-track album, Bebe Cool, Chameleone and the like only boast of one hit song since last year. We are better than any artiste in Uganda.

But Tonjagala has struggled on the charts.

You do not judge an album's performance basing on local airwaves, some of whose coverage does not go beyond Kampala. You cannot trust people who make the playlists. Our music has gone international and truthfully speaking, Dudu, Lwaki Tonjagala and Pollination are very popular songs. Once our collabo with Amani comes out, every hater will shut their big mouths.

How have you managed to stick together for this long?

We are best friends. We have known each other since our Leone Island days that we have now become like brothers. Our families have also become tight friends.

Of course we quarrel and fight once in a while but our bond is too strong. Money and women issues are the lead cause of group fall-outs; so, we learnt to separate them from business.

How many members make up the Goodlyfe crew?

Goodlyfe is a huge entity ran by Mowzey Radio and Weasel. However, we do not sign binding contracts with the rest of the members; it is free entry and free exit. Some of the members whom you know best have been greedy and hence left us.

But as per now, we have Diamond Oscar and Chagga. Others are on and off. We are basically young artistes trying to help our colleagues. People come and do songs with us to boost their career, which is good.

Some people say your music thrives on beef.

We are mainly inspired by our life experiences and those of other people. But it is okay if the audience finds their own interpretation in our music because that is what music is all about.

Are you aware that some sections of the media have resolved to boycott all your shows following your assault on Dembe FM's Lwasama Ojambo?

Media needs to redefine itself because some so-called journalists are killing your beautiful profession. We know some of these people and we will hunt them down and deal with them. We will take them to Police. They are a bunch of illiterate, unqualified idiots.

We dare any of them to bring their qualification papers.

What do you say about last week's Battle of the Champions concert?

Bebe Cool and Bobi Wine are champions in their own right; though they are nowhere compared to us. It was rather a humbling experience seeing two big shots and archrivals tussle it out musically. The fans enjoyed it. We have a lot of respect for the two because they paved the way for us. We are also open to such challenges; we dare any artiste to bring it on.

Do you also have the same respect for Chameleone?

Why not? Chameleone is one of the greatest artistes Uganda has ever had. He is a man who will always stay on top even when he seems to be experiencing the worst music days. People love him. He mentored us under his Leone Island. We got private misunderstandings and that is why we left. He is doing his thing and we are doing ours.

Radio, There have been rumours that Lillian [Mbabazi] left you; would you like to clarify on that?

Lillian and I are comfortable with the kind of relationship we share. We have a lovely son whom we want to protect from unnecessary attention. I respect her and I do not want to talk about her; our thing is our thing. I did not call any media house to let them know we were courting. This is our private business.

Where do you see Goodlyfe in the next five years?

We will be in a league of our own. We get stronger by the day. Next year's album, which we have by the way started working on, is even bigger than all our previous albums. Our challenge is to always make the next song better than the previous one and we are holding on to that principle.

Final word.

We are so grateful for the support you have shown us since Nakudata. We can only pledge to never let you down. Come and enjoy the show at Africana on April 11, Crested Crane hotel in Jinja on 12th and KK beach on 13th.
