Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State Tuesday said he had the right to lead any protest if he felt an institution of the state was being mismanaged.
However, a youth organisation, Edo Youth Vanguard (EYV) has sued for peace cautioning the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) to eschew politics of violence, which have led to loss of lives.
But Oshiomhole, who spoke to journalists in an interview in Benin City, said: "I will lead more protest if the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State continues to plan on how to rig the forth coming governorship elections.
"I want to lead by example. If I asked my people to go and protest I will lead the protest and share the burden of protesting under the sun. Any attempt to rig this election will be resisted. I am not going to hide. I am not like others who will plan at night. I walk in the day time. This country is ours. We can't allow a man in his nineties to mess up our future for those who still have more years. There is no hiding place," he said.
Meanwhile, the youth organisation which rose from an emergency meeting in Benin City, said utterances by Oshiomhole, especially in the wake of his slain Principal Private Secretary, Mr. Olaitan Oyerinde, was condemnable as judgment had already been passed on the opposition party before calling on the security agencies to fish out the perpetrators of the heinous crime.
In a communiqué signed by its National Coordinator, Mr. Mathew Idemudia, the group stated that: "We are saddened that every step of the Governor now leads to death and that makes us wonder whether it was not the same Governor who swore to defend and protect the lives of Edo citizens when he assumed office almost four years ago."
The communiqué also condemned the incessant street protest lead by the Chief Security Officer in the person of the governor, stating that, "who will protect the citizens of Edo State when the Chief Executive himself becomes the leader of the protest group."
The youth body also expressed dismay on the proliferation of arms and ammunitions in the state, which no doubt has put the state on siege, and called on the Federal Government to declare a state of Emergency if the trend continues, alleging that thugs are daily been trained by the same Governor to prosecute his electoral activities ahead of the July Governorship elections.
On the recent killing of the governor's aide, the youth group condemned the unfortunate incident while earnestly pleading with Edo people to remain calm and law abiding, and urges the Nigeria Police to expedite action and conclude its investigation speedily in order to unearth the culprits to bring them to book.
