Kenya: Court Blocks Matemu From EACC Top Job

Newly appointed director of the anti-corruption commission Mumo Matemu has been stopped from taking office. Justice Anyara Emukule granted the Trusted Society of Human Rights Alliance civil society group with the orders temporarily barring Matemu from taking office or having his name gazetted as the director of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission.

Emukule said the allegations made against Matemu by the civil society group were 'grave'and needed to be resolved before he took his oath of office. Emukule ordered that the file be forwarded to Chief Justice Willy Mutunga for the constitution of a special judges bench of even numbers to hear the case. Emukule said the case raised grave allegations of a plot by the Executive and Parliament to engage in acts against the constitution and there was urgent need for the constitution to be interpreted properly.
