The Gadaffi Mosque in Kampala is believed to be the best and largest mosque in sub-Saharan Africa.

It is now seven months since the fall and subsequent death of former Libyan leader Col. Muammar Gadaffi and there is worry that the mosque will not maintain its status.

This is because the fall of Gadaffi was interpreted as the fall of all that he had started, including his businesses and other initiatives in Uganda.

At the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC), the fall of Gadaffi meant the laying off of workers, especially casual workers employed by the mosque.

The Mufti, Sheikh Shaban Mubajje, has however, assured the Muslim community of continuous maintenance of the mosque.

"We held talks with Eng. Muhammed Abed Shukri, who holds one of the top positions in the World Islamic Call Society.

He promised to respect the earlier agreements we signed with the association.

This mosque will be taken care of," Mubajje said.

He made the disclosure during the inauguration ceremony of newly elected members of the UMSC general assembly at Gadaffi Mosque on Monday.

Mubajje explained that Shukri is the architect who designed and over saw the completion of the mosque.

He added that the mosque and the Muslim community would continue receiving support from the Interreligious Council, Unicef, USAID and UNFPA.
