Tanzania: Driver Dies Amid Suicide Claims

A driver of Land Rover plying the Mererani KIA route has allegedly committed suicide by swigging down a insecticide potion.

The Regional Police Commander of Manyara Assistant Commissioner Liberatus Sabas said the victim, Mr. Mathias Clement Kway (63), was a resident of Songambele at the Mererani township, Simanjiro District in Manyara Region.

He said Kway died on May 8 this year at 5 am while in a friend's house in Songambele. The Motive for the death has not been established but when the police arrived at the scene they recovered an empty bottle of Diaznone insecticide under his bed.

He said a few days earlier he complained of a sprained leg for a long time but could not find any sympathy from relatives. On the fateful day he planned to go to the Mererani Tanzanite mines but when the landlord went to wake him up in his room he found him dead.

It is assumed that he committed suicide after giving up in life because of his suffering, the police chief said.

He said his body was been taken to KCMC Hospital mortuary in Moshi, Kilimanjaro Region for post-mortem before burial.
