Kenya: Githurai Residents Call for Council's Action As Water Floods Their Homes

Residents of Githurai at the weekend protested over the Municipal Council of Ruiru's failure to assist in draining water which has flooded in their homes after water pipes broke while repairing roads. The residents stormed the Ruiru council offices demanding to be addressed and complained that there was politics being played in the whole issue and were left suffering as water had flooded into their houses. "A council road repair tractor came into the area to repair roads in the area but then it was removed and left broken water pipes and broken sewerage and due to the heavy rains the waters now have flooded into our homes and has become a health hazard forcing many tenants to vacate the area,"said John Mwangi a resident.

The residents also accused the area councillor Moses wahome who ordered works in the area to be withdrawn as he was not consulted on the repairs of the area. "Why are the in house fighting of the council being used against us we are the ones suffering soon there will be a disaster in the area as storey buildings are flooded for two weeks now and nothing is being done," said Mary Wanjiku a resident.

The residents also accused council officers of stealing 4 Lorries of building blocks, sand and ballast which were on sale with the council carrying the materials claiming the sellers were operating illegally on a by-pass but only 3 lorries were taken to the council, the other 4 and that of sand and ballast were alleged diverted elsewhere for sale.

Mayor Geoffrey Kaara addressed the angry residents who tried to break into the council offices saying that the clerk had given them a raw deal and the clerk had refused to work with him in solving the council issues. "There are some councilors and chief officers of the council led by the clerk who are giving the residents a raw deal due to their long battles which had led to the closing of the clerks office months ago,"said Kaara.

Kaara said that since the town clerk refusal to work with the councillors the municipality had been receiving poor services from the council and residents and businesses people in the area has ever been complaining. kaara however called upon the minister for local government to intervene on the matter and solve the wrangles in Ruiru municipal council so that better services can be rendered to the residents.
