Rwanda: Landslides Hamper Road Rehabilitation

The mostly affected part is within Karongi district where floods often sweep stones and mud down into the road, almost blocking the passage. This makes it hard for road workers to go on with the rehabilitation activity.

Passengers from and to Kigali are often delayed on the road between Rubengera and Bwishyura sectors because of caterpillars clearing the lane. Sometimes mud slide occurs without rain.

To tackle this issue, road management unit in the ministry of infrastructure has introduced the use of stone walls to block mud and stones from falling into the road.

Part of Gitarama-Kibuye Road to be rehabilitation is 74 km. The works are supervised by the Ministry of Infrastructures. They kicked-off in 2012 for a period of three years.
