Kenya: Eldoret Cops Probe Moi Hospital Cheques Fraud

Police in Eldoret are investigating fraud at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in which employees colluded with bank workers to divert money meant to pay suppliers and consultants. The hospital's chief executive officer John Kibosia has ordered for an internal audit of all cheque payments following the graft revelations in which some accounts staff cashed cheques at a bank in Busia.

Already two employees have been charged with diverting and cashing a Sh850,000 cheque payment to a doctor for consultancy services. The cheque, which had been written and prepared in the consultant's name was cashed by the employees from the accounts department in collusion with some bank workers. "We have already charged two suspects in court and we will have more from the bank once the investigations are completed", said Eldoret deputy police boss Chares Mutua. "Police are dealing with that matter and as you know that is not something we can even debate about. Those involved have to face the law," said Kibosia.
