Nigeria: FG Inaugurates Mass Literacy Campaign Committee

Federal Government has inaugurated a technical committee for a national mass literacy campaign as part of efforts to make 40 million Nigerians literate by 2015.

Minister of State for Education, Nyesom Wike, who inaugurated the committee yesterday in Abuja, said the campaign would increase awareness and strengthen commitment of stakeholders to eradicate illiteracy.

Wike said ignoring Nigeria's 64 million illiterates is a threat to economic development efforts by government.

The 22-member committee is made up of officials from the Federal Ministry of Education, parastatals, private organisations, international development partners and civil society organisations. The committee is chaired by the Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-formal Education (NMEC), Jibrin Paiko.
