Kenya: Jica Promises Support for Geothermal Power Projects

Japanese International Cooperation Agency will support the geothermal energy production in the country. Visiting JICA president Akihiko Tanaka praised Kenya for leading the way in the development and utilisation of clean energy, adding that the agency will back the country's efforts to harness the potential. He was speaking yesterday during a tour of the Olkaria geothermal power plant in Naivasha.

Already JICA has signed a 29.5 billion Yen(Sh32.6 billion) loan agreement with Kengen for the Olkaria I and IV power plants. The money will be for the expansion of the Olkaria I to enable it supply 140MW to the national grid as the demand for power in the country continues to soar. Tanaka said this is the first such project to be supported by a Climate Change Japanese loan in sub-Saharan Africa.
