Tanzania: Energy Ministry Boss Eye Yanga Post

AS today is the deadline for picking nomination forms ahead of July 15 Young Africans SC elections, the battle for leadership gained further rhythm as Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Energy and Minerals, Eliakhim Maswi joined the fray in the executive committee member slot.

Yanga elections committee Secretary, Francis Kaswahili confirmed to the 'Daily News' that Maswi was among individuals who collected the nomination forms yesterday morning.

However, when reached for comments, Maswi said he did not go to the club to pick the nomination forms but suggested; "May be someone else collected the forms for me."

Kaswahili named others who picked the elections forms yesterday as former executive member Ally Mayay, Mussa Katabaro, Muzamil Katunzi, Lameck Nyambaya, Edgar Fongo, Ahmad Waziri Gao Yona Kevela, Aaron Nyanda, Mohamed Mbaraka and Ramadhani Mzimba.

They are all vying for the executive committee member posts. Yanga is expected to hold the mini-election on July 15, this year, after the club's Chairman, Lloyd Nchunga, opted to resign alongside eight members of the club's executive committee. On Monday, the club's financier, Yusuf Manji, also joined the list of contestants for the chairmanship.

Handeni District Commissioner, Muhingo Rweyemamu, also took a form on the same day to contest for the club's executive committee membership and Abdallah Bin Kleb, who is vying for the vice-chairmanship.

With the executive committee lacking quorum following the resignation of the eight members and the chairman, the club had no option but hold a mini-election to fill the positions and eventually have power to make decisions pertaining to any of the club's activities.

Nchunga's resignation was prompted by pressure from the council of the club's elders, who forced the former to leave the post for what the elders termed as inability to properly govern the club, particularly after Yanga suffered a humiliating 5-0 defeat at the hands of rivals, Simba, in one of the last matches of this year's Mainland Premier League.

Other people that have so far collected nomination forms to contest for leadership positions include John Jambele, Jumanne Mwamenywa, Abdallah Saleh, Abdallah Sharia, Gadius Ishengoma, Peter Haule and Beda Tindwa, with all contesting for the executive committee membership.

Isaac Chanje and Ayoub Nyenzi have taken forms to vie for the vice-chairmanship and today has been set as the deadline for the process of taking forms.
