Nigeria: Group Seeks Support for Orphans

A non-governmental organization, Al-Ummah Orphans Foundation, has called for support from Nigerians to better the lives of orphans in the country.

Chairman of the foundation, Ambassador Lawan Gana Guba, made the call yesterday when he led a team of the organization's leadership to the Media Trust office in Abuja.

He said the foundation was established in 2009 to provide care and support to orphans in the areas of medical care, sustenance, shelter and education.

Guba said the group has so far created an e-database and registered 3,191 orphans in 28 pilot areas in the FCT, established a temporary orphanage at Nurul Bayan Academy in Abuja which will become operational from this month.

He added that the group has also designed an intervention programme for community-based orphans who are not in orphanages.

He said the foundation also intended to build an orphans facility centre, facilitate the establishment of orphanages and launch the foundation's appeal fund, among other initiatives.
