Uganda: Metrosexual - Be a Man, Not an Ape

column

Last week, we discussed the different types of beard and ways of tending to them.

It, therefore, follows that we discuss other hairs on the body because men are generally hairy. Well, women are ahead of us because they have been shaving the hairy parts for centuries, almost shaving everything they can find. I don't, however, believe that men should go to that extreme.

Men are hairy and should stay that way. They should simply be hairy enough and yet remain within the confines of what is considered hygienic. This means that the body hairs should not be left to grow so long that soap does not lather fast enough. Since we are a hairy lot, we should learn to get in the habit of taming our hairs with a trim. Remember not to remove all hairs because some ladies like them.

They have even gone ahead to name the beloved strands on our chests the love carpet. Now we wouldn't want to mess with that, would we?

By the way, have you ever wondered why Mzungu chicks like our rugged dreadlocked brothers? It is because they love the rugged beards Rastas have as they suggest that our brothers have not cut all the other hairs too. Do not get me wrong, I am happy that our hairs make us attractive but I am also concerned that they are not allowed to grow the extra inch(es).

"Nothing should be shaved, lest a man becomes a child or a woman," a guy said in defence of our hairs.

He needs to understand the difference between Tarzan the Apeman and a man because we do not live in the jungle anymore like Zinjanthropus (early man). We need to accept that 'manscaping' or body grooming is important for hygiene and personal bedroom issues.

'Manscaping' involves trimming the hair on the chest, back, and nether regions.

Keeping a neatly trimmed chest, back, shoulders, and more will make you appear cleaner and send the message that you care about grooming. Trimming body hairs enhances musculature and shape. There is a saying that trimmed hedges make the house look bigger; it probably applies to our bodies when we trim our hairs.

See, you don't only need the gym, the salon and your razor too can do wonders. Most women don't like their guys shaved down like a featherless chicken, but encourage their guys to do a little regular trim of some hairs listed below:

Ears and nose: Those with hairs in the ear should endeavour to trim them in the bathroom or at the barbers.

Eyebrows: They should be left alone unless they are the kind that grows to look like two caterpillars lying on your face. Remember not to cut them so thin because you may look like a drag queen.

Nether region: Giving "Willie and The Boys" a little haircut now and then is required as well. Shaving this area can be very difficult but you reap the rewards of being hygienic. Some guys are in the habit of scratching their groin area because they have overgrown hairs down under.

Apart from the list, leave everything else alone and that includes hair on the legs; 'manscaping' does not go that far.
