Kenya: Shabbir Protests Construction of Gas Plant in Kisumu

KISUMU Town East MP Shakeel Shabbir has opposed a plan to construct a gas filling plant in the constituency. He has asked the Environment ministry and the Parliamentary Committee on Energy not to allow the implementation of the project.

"We want this issue to be investigated urgently so that residents Nyalenda A are not exposed to the dangers similar to the Sinai disaster," reads part of the MP's letter to Environment minister Chirau Mwakwere and copied to the House energy committee chairman James Rege. The MP accuses the Kisumu City Council of allowing the construction of the plant by a private company "without referring to Nema (National Environment Management Authority) or getting an environment impact assessment report".
