Tunisia: Closure of Ras Jedir Border Crossing on Libyan Side Following Armed Clashes

Medenine — The border crossing of Ras Jedir was closed on the Libyan side following armed clashes that took place on the night of Saturday to Sunday between militiamen from Zouara and the Libyan Army.

Security sources told TAP news agency that the border crossing, which was in the hands of the militia, is not under the Libyan Army's control.

The same sources said the closure of the border crossing meets safety considerations to avoid any reaction of the militia that could endanger the life of travellers, adding that only urgent cases and ambulances are allowed to cross.

TAP correspondent noted that groups of Tunisian citizens closed the border crossing on the Tunisian side in protest against the arrest of 12 Tunisian nationals in the Libyan territory.

Despite the long queue of Libyan cars and trucks, the groups of Tunisian citizens have not allowed cars to cross except for a short time following information about the release of Tunisians arrested in Libya.

They then re-closed the border crossing because the information on the release of Tunisians was not confirmed.
