Ghana: Police Nab Pre-Paid Meter Fraudster

A man, who allegedly defrauded over 2,000 people in about 24 communities in the Ejisu Juaben Municipality, has been apprehended by the Central CID in Kumasi.

The suspect (name withheld), said to be the brother of the former Municipal Chief Executive of the area, Mr. Ahmed Boakye, would be arraigned before a law court in Kumasi on June 18, 2012.

Reports indicate that in 2010, the suspect used the Ejisu Juaben Assembly information van and made a public announcement in the name of the Assembly, that he had been assigned the responsibility to distribute pre-paid meters to residents of the communities in the Municipality.

Each person was to pay GH¢80.00 and issued a receipt.

Believing that the suspect was from the District Assembly, they complied and paid the said amount with the hope of getting a prepaid meter fixed on their premises.

After months of waiting in vain, the matter was reported to the Ejisu police, after it came out that the suspect had no links with the Assembly.

Meanwhile, the case has been transferred from to the Ejisu police to the Central CID for the investigations to continue.

The detective in charge of the case has urged all victims to produce copies of their receipts covering the payment of GH¢80.00 to the suspect as evidence to prosecute the suspect in court.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Municipal Coordinating Director, in the absence of the Municipal Chief Executive and the Municipal Co-ordinating Director has declined to comment about the matter with the excuse that it is under investigation.
