Nigeria: Senate Committee Flays Orubebe Over N300 Billion Abandoned Project

The Senate Committee on Niger Delta Affairs has flayed Niger Delta Affairs Minister Elder Godsday Orubebe for abandoning a road project awarded for over N300 billion.

Speaking to our correspondent on phone yesterday, the Vice Chairman of the committee, Senator Nurudeen Abatemi-Usman (PDP, Kogi Central), said the committee was shocked to discover that the East-West road, spanning across the Niger Delta states, was yet to be executed six years after it was contracted.

According to Abatemi-Usman, the committee has concluded arrangements to query the minister on the issue next Tuesday.

"We just returned from an oversight function in Niger Delta and the major project under the ministry is the East-West road which is a road that spans across the Niger Delta states, and it is a length of 349 kilometres.

This contract was awarded in 2006 by the Federal Ministry of Works, but with the advent of the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs, it was transferred. Sadly, we are nowhere on that project," he said.
