Kenya: Chepkurui Leads North Rift Team to National Championships

ALL Africa Games 1,500m silver medallist Joyce Chepkurui tops the North Rift team for this weekend's National Bank of Kenya/Athletics Kenya national championships starting tomorrow. With the Gothenburg marathon title safely tucked under her belt, on-form Chepkurui will test the opposition in the 1,500m before fighting it out with double world champion Vivian Cheruiyot next week in the 10,000m race. The Iten-based runner will seek points in the four-lap race alongside Faith Cheruto.

Chepkurui won the event at the North Rift Provincial Championships after posting 4:20.0 ahead of Cheruto (4:30.0) last weekend. She said she will be seeking speed in this weekend's race before attacking the 10,000m during the national trials in a bid to make the Kenya team to London Olympics. The 24-year-old Chepkurui is coached by Sammy Rono under Italian track and field agent Gianni Demadona stable. In the men's 1,500m, Christopher Cheruiyot and Vincent Letting will be the region's flag bearers ion the race while Hosea Nailel and Stephen Tum will be North Rift's hopeful in the men's 10,000m. Margaret Agai (33:52:4) and Rebecca Chesir (34:39:30) will compete in the women's 10,000m at the nationals .
