Kenya: Low Passenger Numbers Force KQ to Suspend Routes

NATIONAL carrier Kenya Airways has officially suspended flights to Rome Italy and to Muscat due to dwindling passenger numbers. KQ, which operated three flights weekly to the Italian capital city every Monday, Thursday and Saturday said the decision was based on insufficient demand to sustain the routes. "Owing to the decreased passenger volumes on these routes, we have decided to re-align our capacity across the entire network to meet growing demand on other destinations including new ones," said chief executive Titus Naikuni. Italy is Kenya's third largest tourism source market and the decision to halt the flights may have an impact on this.

The Italian route was only launched in late 2010 as the airline's fourth route in Europe. Apart from Rome, other European cities that KQ flies to include Paris in France, London and Amsterdam in Netherlands. Previously it operated to other European cities like Copenhagen in Denmark and Stockholm Sweden but pulled out due to stiff competition and low passenger traffic
