Statement from Millennium Challenge Corporation CEO Daniel W. Yohannes on the elections in Lesotho:

The Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) congratulates the people of Lesotho on their successful election and Prime Minister Motsoahae Thomas Thabane for forming Lesotho's first coalition government. This historic and peaceful transfer of power is an important step forward for democracy in Lesotho and in Africa.

MCC has worked closely with the Government of Lesotho on developing and implementing the five-year, $362.6 million compact. We thank former Prime Minister Pakalitha Mosisili for his support through each stage of the Lesotho Compact. MCC looks forward to working closely with the new government as we continue to support water, health and private sector development projects that aim to benefit more than 1 million people.

It is indeed commendable to be having the development community supporting the new government but also holding it accountable.

We have experiences where members of the development community has served to encourage discord other than unity in National governments.

We would, therefore, like to see all members of the development community community commiting to supporting the new government and its People in its endeavors. Such support should, however, go beyond rhetoric to concrete efforts through support, holding our government to account and putting their resources where their 'mouths' are!
