Accra — The 2nd edition of Economy Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) Sports championship will kick off tomorrow.
The Championship is an age-group event. Participants must be under 23 years of age but the age limit for athletics is 19.
This year's edition which will be hosted by Ghana in Accra will start with an opening ceremony at 1:30pm (Ghana time) and 2:30pm Nigerian time.
As at the time of filing this report, it is yet unknown if all the participating countries have arrived as accreditation was still ongoing at the Accra Stadium.
All members of the ECOWAS are expected to take part in the competition that will end on 22nd of June.
Countries expected to participate are: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Côte d'Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Togo.
Participants are to compete in traditional wrestling, athletics, Boxing, Volleyball and Handball.
Participating to win
Speaking with Dailytrust at the Accra Stadium, Ghana, the Head of Nigeria delegation to the Competition, Elias Gora said Nigeria will triumph over other participants at
the end of the event.
Nigeria won the first edition of the competition and Mr. Gora expressed optimism that the country will repeat the feat.
"We won the first edition back then in Nigeria and we are determined to win this as well.
