West Africa: Ecowas Games - Nigeria Wins First Gold

Accra — Nigeria's Agbeni Shimenenge has won the first Gold medal at the ongoing ECOWAS Games in Accra, Ghana.

She beat Abu Agnes and Launab Rita both of Ghana to the first position in the Women 800m.

The Women's 800m race was the first event after the Games was declared opened by the Vice President of Ghana, John Mahama.

Speaking after the race, Agber who ran 2.09 minutes, expressed satisfaction with her performance, though regretted she couldn't beat her personal best of 2.03 minutes.

"I'm happy with my race. This is just the beginning. I'm going to win more for Nigeria."

In the other race for the day, Nigerian Barnabas David bagged a bronze medal in the Men's 1500m.

The Gold and Silver medals were won by Ghanaian Samson Azuma and Bright Atta Gyamfi respectively.

Ghana tops table

After the two races today, host Nation, Ghana sits ontop of the medals table.

Ghana has a Gold medal, two silver medals and one Bronze medal.

Closely behind the host nation is Nigeria with a Gold medal and a Bronze medal.

Hostilities will continue tomorrow at both the Accra Stadium and Elwak Stadium, all in Accra, Ghana.
