Super Eagles Most Valuable Player in the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against the Wasps of Rwanda, Reuben Gabriel has said the award is a major source of inspiration for him to do his best for the national team in subsequent engagements.
Speaking to Trustsports yesterday, the Kano Pillars midfielder said the award which is his first in the colours of the Super Eagles means a lot to him and would inspire him to do more for the country.
He said during the match, he never gave a thought to the award which was up for grabs as what occupied his mind was the need for him to contribute to the team's victory against Rwanda.
Gabriel said he gave his best and in the end he was awarded the Most Valuable Player and so he would cherish that moment for a long time.
The hard tackling player said he was humbled by the award considering that he picked it ahead of some of the more experienced foreign based Eagles who played in the match.
He also dedicated the five thousand dollars award to his late mother and his team mates who contributed to his outstanding performance in the match.
His words: "Winning the MVP was a special moment for me. I never knew I would be voted the best player in that match because during the match I did not think about it. All I wanted to do was to give my best performance so that Eagles would win the match.
"Therefore when I was eventually picked as the MVP, I was overwhelmed with joy. Without doubt, this award would inspire me to do more for my country. I will always give my best.
"I therefore dedicate this special award to my late mother, Esther Gabriel and my team mates who helped me to do some of the things that made it possible for me to be given the award", he said.
Gabriel said now that the national team is on break, he would focus on helping his club to win this year's Nigeria Premier League title.
"Now that we have gone on break, I will shift my attention to Kano Pillars. I will go back and assist my team mates in the battle for the NPL title. My ambition is to remain an integral member of the Super Eagles and also win the NPL title with Kano Pillars".
