To announce its formation and to garner support from key stakeholders in the financial industry, the Society of Actuaries of Namibia (SAN) held a launch event on Wednesday 20th of June 2012 in Windhoek at the Fresh 'n Wild, Utopia.
The Society of Actuaries of Namibia was established to raise awareness and to encourage and support the growth of the actuarial profession in Namibia. It provides a platform representing the interests of these financial professionals, fostering relations with other actuarial organizations and protecting the public's interest by promoting and upholding the highest standards of professional conduct and integrity.
The event was officially launched by the Minister of Finance Hon. Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila. She encouraged the nation not to give up on the economic growth of Namibia. "We must demonstrate that these investments made in our country are neither appropriate nor realistic. I therefore believe SAN will go from strength to strength."
Peter Temple President-Elect of the Actuarial Society of South Africa encouraged the actuaries to grow the profession in places where it is not recognized. He further said they look forward to working hand in hand with the Namibian society.
President of SAN Carmen Forster said "With our creation we can finally provide a platform through which the interests of the local actuarial profession can be represented more actively locally, and help to foster relations with other actuarial organizations. This has already started by our society's recent admittance as an Associate Member of the International Actuarial Association."
She added that SAN will raise awareness to, encourage and support the growth of the actuarial profession in Namibia. "It aims to protect public interest by promoting and upholding the highest standards of professional conduct and integrity of actuarial services in Namibia. The society will establish a framework for managing the relationship between itself and the employers of actuaries and actuarial students in Namibia," she said.
Carmen said this will culminate in the registration of these employers as Actuarial Training Offices and/or Registered Services Providers. 'SAN encourages all professionals engaged in the provision of actuarial services to Namibian institutions to become members of the society.
