Gambia: Woman Arrested for 'Baby Dumping'

Basse, Urr — One Fatoumata Damba commonly known as 'Jonfolo' of Chamoi village in the Tumana District has been arrested and detained at Basse Police Station for allegedly dumping her new born baby.

This was confirmed to the Daily Observer by Police Commissioner Ousman Jatta of the Upper River Region (URR) who said the incident happened on Saturday 16th June, 2012, in Chamoi village, URR. He explained that the suspect is married but her husband is abroad and she allegedly had a love affair with a Malian, who impregnated her but absconded when he discovered that she was pregnant for him.

Jatta further explained that the suspect delivered a premature baby and she decided to take the said baby and wrap her with several cloths and throw her into a pit latrine. "The woman delivered on Thursday, 14th June, 2012. The baby spent three days in the toilet and the family members did not notice it on time because the suspect was staying in her own apartment where [she had] all the facilities she needs including toilet," he said.
