Photo: Arne Doornebal Bukoba — KAGERA Regional Commissioner, Fabian Massawe has urged albinos in the region to enlist themselves to ensure they turn up during the Population and Housing Census exercise that will take place on August 25, this year.
He made the call when he visited offices of People Living with Disabilities (PLWD) situated along Airport road in Bukoba Municipality on Friday. He said the census was very important as it enabled the government to know the exact number of the people to provide the essential services.
Meanwhile, a total of five albinos were killed on superstitious beliefs between 2008 to this year, Kagera Regional Police Commander (RPC) Philip Kalangi has disclosed.
He said apart from the five deaths, another albino was attacked by unknown people, who escaped with both his arms while in Biharamulo district, unknown people exhumed an albino body buried three years ago and escaped with the bones. He urged residents in the region to report to police whenever they spotted such people.
Mr Kalangi further said police were looking for two leaders of a small religious sect, who preached Satanic messages, exhorting followers not to take sick relatives to hospital and not to send their children to school. He identified the suspects as Ephraim Kyenganzi and John Bosco, who have both gone into hiding.
According to RPC Kalangi, the suspects had also threatened their followers not to use the internet and mobile phones, on alleging that communication devices bore number 666 which allegedly crucified Jesus on the Cross.
