Namibia: SPYL Kavango Conference Never Discussed Top Four

THE recently elected Swapo Party Youth League (SPYL) leadership in the Kavango Region has distanced itself from a widely reported resolution that the current top four positions in the mother body be left unchanged at the upcoming congress.

The Kavango regional executive held an extra-ordinary meeting to discuss the said resolution, which was meant to keep the top four positions intact.

The resolution was supposed to be tabled at the SPYL congress in August for debate and, if successful, put on the Swapo Party's end of year congress.

The top four of Swapo are President Hifikepunye Pohamba as president of the party, Hage Geingob as Vice President, Pendukeni Iivula-Ithana as Secretary General and Nangolo Mbumba as the Deputy Secretary General.

In terms of the Swapo rules, the Vice President will automatic take over as President of the party when Pohamba steps down at the end of his second term of office as Head of State on 21 March 2015.

"We would like to condemn this piece of information in the strongest term it deserves. The issue of the top four was not on our conference agenda and at no time during the epoch of the conference did we discuss it. We equally have no intention to lobby such an uninformed move," said SPYL's regional mobiliser, Mbangu Paulus.

Paulus told The Namibian that they don't know where this information originated from, saying the names of the top four were not even mentioned during the regional conference. He said the information that they took such a resolution is a lie and distortion of the facts.

"The leadership of the SPYL in Kavango would also like to make it categorically clear that we in the region respect the party's decisions and directives and will fully uphold Swapo's decision and directive that the issue of the top four should not be discussed until directed so by the party," said Paulus.

However, he confirmed that the conference nominated Elijah Ngurare for the position of secretary and Veikko Nekundi as his deputy at the youth league congress in August.

In the meantime, the SPYL in Khomas held its regional conference over the weekend and nominated the same two youth leaders as well as elected a new team of leaders for the region.

Paulus Immanuel was elected as secretary, while Imms Nashinge is the new secretary for information, publicity and mobilisation. Lucas Shekwaanyena was elected as the treasurer and the additional members are Austin Kwenani, Felix Haingura and Ndeulipula Hamutuwa and Tuyeni Kandume.

SPYL regional conferences are slated to be held in Erongo, Caprivi, Omaheke, Hardap and Otjozundjupa regions before the end of this month.
