Rwanda: Paralympic Athlete Nsengimana Qualifies for London Games

Theoneste Nsengimana has defied odds to be the latest athlete to qualify for the fifteenth Paralympics Games scheduled for August 29 to September 9 in London.

Nsengimana clocked 4.06.05 to finish second in the 1500m T46 event during the Belfort Championship for the handicapped athletes stage in France on Saturday.

The 23-year old set up a new national record and and run under the minimum qualification time of 4 minutes and 08 seconds required to compete at the Paralympic games in 1500m.

The Paralympic games chef de Mission Celestin Nzeyimana said yesterday, "His time is enough to enable him compete in the Paralympics Games. He is our 14th athlete who will represent Rwanda at the Paralympic games and we are very happy for such achievement,"

This was his second international outing following last year's All Africa Games held in Maputo, Mozambique where he ran his best time of 4.14.00 in 1500m.

Nsegimana joins national sitting volleyball team, power lifter Théogène Hakizimana and 400m & 800m specialist Hermas Cliff Muvunyi who have already booked their spots for London.
