Statistics from the Rwanda Education Board (REB)show that the number of candidates to sit for the national examinations in 2012 at all the three levels has increased compared to last year.

According to the Director General of REB John Rutayisire the total number of candidates who registered at all levels who are expected to sit for the national exams this year is 84, 321 up from 80,093 in 2011. There is an increase of a total of 4,228, equivalent to 5.3 percent.

In 2011, there were 167,386 candidates for primary leaving exams alone, but for 2012, 176,884 have already registered showing an increase of about 9,498 candidates, equivalent to 5.7 percent.

Rutayisire says that the number of sitting centers has since also increased this year at 1.3 percent more than last year.

He says that the increase is a s a result of the increase in the number of the number of schools under the twelve year programme of free education.

The number of O-level schools was 1,061 in 2011, but it has now increased to 1,101 this year which is about 3.8 percent increase.
