Kenya: Tight Security Marks Heads Conference

Traders are doing a booming business at this year's headteachers conference in Mombasa. However, they have to be thoroughly screened before being allowed to display their wares at the conference venue. The local commercial photographers have been hit after being denied entry into the conference hall. In the past, they have been paying Sh3,000 to be allowed to take and sell pictures to the school heads and other participants.

The other traders and exhibitors who gained entry capitalised on the opportunity to showcase and sell their products and ideas to the more than 5,000 school heads at the conference. The annual event usually brings together headteachers from all country's public secondary schools. Traders usually get the opportunity to sell ideas and products of school facilities such as cooking equipment, boilers, books and stationery.
