Kenya: Council Seeks Out of Court Settlement With Barclays

THE City Council of Nairobi and Barclays Bank have agreed to settle a Sh30 million advertising row out of court. Appearing before Justice Joseph Mutava yesterday, the council told the court that they were ready to negotiate with the bank to settle the matter amicably. The judge granted them time to settle the matter as stated but extended the orders he issued last week barring the council from blocking the bank's branches with garbage trucks.

The bank through lawyer Allen Gichuhi had rushed to court after the council threatened to block some of its branches with garbage trucks if it does not pay the money. It is alleged that the council had threatened to block the entrances to the bank's Queensway and Market branches. Gichuhi told the court that even though the council was issuing the threat, the bank had paid for all its outdoor advertising as agreed. The lawyer said all the bills had been forwarded to Blueprint Marketing, which has been licensed by the council.
