Zambia: Illegal Miner Killed in Chingola

AN ILLEGAL miner has died after a pit caved in at the Konkola Copper Mine (KCM) scrap yard in Chingola.

The illegal miner was digging for copper seven metres underground when the soil collapsed, killing him instantly.

Copperbelt commissioner of police Mary Tembo identified the deceased as Derrick Simusamba, 32, of Kamakonde Township in Kitwe. He died on Monday around 13:00 hours.

Other miners struggled to save him but they failed and had to wait for an excavator to dig out the soil in order to retrieve the body.

Meanwhile, police in Kitwe have recovered a motor vehicle belonging to Kankoyo Breweries after it was stolen on Monday around 01:00 hours.

A suspect identified as Charles Chisanga has been picked up.

The suspect was found driving the vehicle in Kankoyo Township in Mufulira when the police pounced on him and recovered the vehicle.
