Kenya: Father Jailed 8 Hours for Killing His Daughter

A man who killed his daughter two weeks ago after he found her making love with a neighbour has been jailed for a day by the High Court in Eldoret. Benjamin Cheruiyot, 34, went home last evening at 6Pam, about eight hours after Justice Festus Azangalala jailed him. He successfully pleaded that he was "merely punishing his daughter whom he loved so much" but in the process he killed her.

His Wife Ruth Chemeli, who was also charged with murder, was acquitted and waited at the High Court for her husband to be freed. They were accused of beating to death 13-year old Olivya Cheruiyot, a standard eight pupil, on June 9 and 10 at Chepterit Village in Nandi. They had both been initially charged with murder but their lawyer David Rioba Omboto first secured the acquittal of Ruth after arguing that the mother of five was not involved in the actual beating of the deceased.
