After successfully hosting a Grand Prix two weeks ago, the Warri Township Stadium will host the first ever African Youth Athletics Championships next year.
The good news came yesterday from Benin Republic where Africa Athletics Championships are taking place in Port Novo.
Bukola Olapade whose company presented Delta's bid on behalf of Delta State and AFN celebrated the award this way: "Our presentation was classic, it was colourful and when they announced that Nigeria won I was excited but not totally surprised."
Olapade was the commissioner of sports in Ogun State under Gben ga Daniel. During his tenure the state hosted the National Sports Festival, built two stadia in Ijebu Ode and Shagamu. Abeokuta was home of the Falcons and they capped their show in sports by hosting WAFU Competitions. Their athletes started competing and ranking among the best in the country although Delta till date remains outstanding in sports development.
Amaju Pinnick, the chairman of Delta State Sports Commission said yesterday the award to host a huge African championship was another landmark in Delta's drive to develop sports not only in the state but also the entire country.
