Some craft makers that managed to benefit from their sweat, have encouraged the upcoming visual artists not to lose hope.
The government of Rwanda through Ministry of trade and industry started a program to promote visual artists as a way of increasing on the country's economy and job creation; artists reveal that success in craft making depends on experience.
Getting your proposal accepted at national level starts with hope, patience and confidence, says Antoinette Mukamusoni; whose proposal was accepted and supported.
Mukamusoni narrates that she started with small items but because of doing the same business for a long time, she joined the cooperative which gives her over Rwf30.000 every month.
Mukamusoni who uses banana fibers and sansevieria to make crafts, and a member of COOPPRWA cooperative in Muhanga district reveals that business booms according to the season.
"I earn a lot of money in summer compared to winter season. Crafts earn me enough money, I take care of my family and pay school fees for my children from this business," Mukamusoni explains.
Eugene Ndagijimana, who owns a factory that processes oil from sunflower seeds in Kamonyi district, asserts that a lot of people do creative things but never come out due to lack of advocacy.
Ndagijimana adds: "The government did well by introducing advocacy through cooperatives. Every Rwandan should strive to add on the skills and make standard items."
Although contractors acknowledge the government for helping them to secure the market of the products, some craft makers still face the challenge of financial support and fail to satisfy the markets, says Ndagijimana.
Minister of Trade and Industry, Francois Kanimba, who had attended the occasion to officially open training for upcoming craft business people on June 26th 2012, denoted that all the above problems can be solved by forming cooperatives.
"I advised you to start a business advocate; it can solve the problem of market and purchasing raw materials."
Minister Kanimba hopes that towards the end of 2020, this government program will help Rwanda to generate over $10million from visual arts industry.
