Nigeria Power Supply Will Be Among Best 20 By 2020 - Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan says power supply in Nigeria will be among the best 20 in the world in the next eight years.

The president gave the assurance in Lagos yesterday at the 40th Annual General Meeting of Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN).

Represented by Dr Samuel Ortom, Minister of State for Trade and Investment, the president said government would do everything possible to address the "structural weaknesses standing between us and revolutionizing the power sector".

"Some of the problems are deep, but not beyond the government. We are currently reviewing the lapses in the power sector to make it one of the best in the world in the year 2020. Nigeria is on the threshold of history, ready to join the world economic powers in the very near future", he said.

The president said the emphasis of government was to promote the processing of the nation's natural resources for consumable commodities, saying this would also beef up "our export portfolio".

He said the government's effort at attracting local and foreign investors into the economy was yielding positive results. "More than 16,000 local and foreign investors have registered their intentions to do business worth about N6.6 trillion in just one year," he said.

The president lauded the MAN's blueprint to boost the sector, assuring them that the consideration of the blueprint would be highly valued by the government and put to work.

The MAN President, Mr. Kola Jamodu, said the manufacturing sector was one of the most powerful engines for economic growth and a catalyst for transformation of the nation's economic structure. (NAN)

I pray that it comes to pass by 2020 because the power supply in Kwale Delta state is the poorest yet one pays so much for little or nothing. Pls can some one remind Mr President that National ID card of 2007 - 2009 has not been sent/released yet any move one makes you re asked to present your National id

Here we go again! We've not crawled yet, we are already takling about running. Why do Nigerian leaders always quantify their aspirations when observable results everywhere are abysmal? I can understand the desire to be positive. But please our leaders, would it hurt to just for once, be a bit more realistic in your public utterances, especially when you know full well that oftentimes what you say cannot be matched by what people see? There should a reality check before you open your mouth. There has got to be a better way of encouraging industries who escaped to other countries in the sub-region to return and establish their industries again than to give them false hopes of the probability of a constant 24/7 supply of electricity. But please, stay away from such catch-phrases as "power supply will (futuristic) be among the best by 2020". Don't raise false hopes, especially if you don't mean it.

I have heard this tone since I was born and am almost 60 years old now . If this makes refrence to political power , chances are there may be some validity . If however we 're talking about energy in form of electricity, it is a blatant nonsense !

Kindergarten with another pulp fiction... Our leaders are used to self deception and so convinced that the Nigerian public is so naive to believe these cheap craps. I thought that he promised to fix it before he leaves office by 2015, now he's talking about 2020, where his dreams can’t even catch. I can name 50 countries in the world with uninterrupted power supply for over 20 years, and then my question; Which one of them will Nigeria's power supply be better than by 2020? Better tell us that the problem is fixed instead of empty promises. We are tired of these craps!

Here he goes again. The mother of this problem, including all others is corruption. Is this hard to figure out? This guy is surrounded by people who are corrupt to the core and looks the other way. He lets the object passby while chasing the shadows.
