Eritrea: Administration of Barentu Sub-Zone Calls for Geological Research Regarding Newly Created Rift

Barentu — The Administration of Barentu sub-zone called for geological research to be conducted as regards new rift created between the villages of Ebaro and Ugana in Sesuna Administrative area.

Indicating that farmers in the area observed the first incident, Mr. Franko Kubaba, Administrator of the sub-zone, explained that they have a concern that there could be any probability of volcanic eruption in the area as there is a history that such incident had happened in the area many years ago.

Reports indicated that the 21cm-wide double-spot rift measured 47 and 25 meters respectively, and that it is 1.30 meters deep.

Among the inhabitants of Ugana, Father Antonio Pasquale, Mr. Saleh Kier Kemis and Mr. Shela Aroda, called on the pertinent bodies to carry out the necessary research in that regard and give an account if the situation involves a state of emergency.
