Egypt: UN Chief Phones Mors, Tantawi

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has phoned Egypt's president-elect Mohamed Morsi and Head of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi.

During the phone call with Morsi, the UN chief congratulated him over winning Egypt's presidency, Ban's spokesperson said in a statement.

Ban wished that all Egyptians could fulfill their aspirations, realize further democracy and consolidate human rights.

During the phone call with Tantawi, the Secretary-General expressed appreciation for the peaceful atmosphere in which the presidential elections were held, Ban's spokesperson said.

Ban noted that the election is not the final phase of the democratic process, but it represents only one phase to achieve democracy.

According to the statement, Ban told Tantawi that he will exert utmost efforts to rally the international community's support to ensure the success of the democratic process in Egypt.
